Where We Are In Place and Time
Inquiry Unit 3
November 17th - December 19th
Transdisciplinary Theme:
Where We Are In Place and Time – An inquiry into orientation in place and time; homes and journeys; the relationships between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives.
Central Idea:
Community development is influenced by a variety of factors.
A study into (lines of inquiry):
· Communities in Hawaii and around the world.
· Communities change over time. (past, present, future, technological change)
· Geography can influence where communities develop.
· Components of various communities
Background:
Students will compare and contrast communities around the world. They will learn about the different components of communities, and how they change over time.
Final Project:
Students will become developers, and create a 3-D community as a class. This will include facilities, geography, homes, resources, transportation, etc. Each class will display their community for the other third grade classes. Students will individually compare and contrast the physical and human characteristics of each community.
School-home Connection:
* Bring in photos from travels around the world – cities, landmarks, sites, etc.
* Discuss why your family chose to live in the community in which you reside (job opportunity, affordability, convenience, schools, etc.)
* Discuss what advantages/disadvantages about your community.
