Transdisciplinary Theme: How We Express Ourselves
An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.
Central Idea:
Music and dance varies throughout the world.
A study into (lines of inquiry):
Background:
Students will inquire into the connections between music and movement. They will look at dance and music from around the world and the various reasons that people perform. Students will understand how pitch, tone, rhythm and tempo affect how we move to music.
Final Project:
In groups, students will develop simple dance movements using music clips provided by the teacher. Each group will focus on a different culture. Performances will be based on the B.E.S.T elements of dance (Body, Energy, Space, Tempo), the purpose for the movements they create (entertainment, telling a story, celebrations, etc.), and student participation. Groups will also present their dance to the class.
School-home Connection:
* Talk with family members about cultural dances and music
* Listen to different radio stations (in the car, streaming online)
* Ask family members if they play any instruments
* Participate is community events that relate to cultural performances (Korean Festival, Okinawan Festival, Bon dances, Hula performances, Luaus, etc.)
* Theater (Lion King, Wicked, etc.)
